MIGRATION
SUMMARY –
There were very few migrants
recorded at the Point this week with the exception of one or two mornings at
the start of the summary period. The station was very quiet compared to
previous years – the average catch-rate this week (.31 birds/net-hour) is down
87% compared to the same period in 2006 (579 birds banded in 247 net-hours for
a catch-rate of 2.34), and 81% compared to the three-year average (2004-2006).
The average dawn temperature from October 3rd-9th was 19
C, which helps explain the lack of bird activity during the course of the
summary period.
Six raptor species were tallied
this week including three Peregrine Falcons, along with five
woodpecker, six thrush and thirteen members of the warbler family. Fall
‘firsts’ included Red-breasted Merganser, Eastern Phoebe,
Eastern Bluebird, Orange-crowned Warbler and Eastern
White-crowned Sparrow.
Seventy-four species were
recorded at the Point this week compared to eighty-one last week and five Fall
‘firsts’ were tallied, which brings the season species count to 154. In all,
116 birds were banded and four recaptured during 370 net-hours for a
catch-rate of .31 birds/net-hour.
